Maindee Primary School is situated in the inner city district to the east of Newport and serves the expanding area of Maindee. The school is housed in a modern single storey building. Outside there are hard surfaced areas, grassed areas, outside play areas for Foundation Phase children, a sensory garden and a Forest School area. The school is administered by Newport County Council and serves a varied area. 32% of pupils are drawn from an economically disadvantaged area and most come from the immediate vicinity of the school.
The school provides education for pupils between three and eleven years of age. Children are admitted to nursery in the term following their third birthday and attend on a part-time basis. Children are admitted to reception in the September following their fourth birthday and attend full time.
English is the home language for 9% of pupils. Nearly 91% speak English as an additional language and there are 23 different first languages spoken by the pupils. There are no Welsh first language pupils.
The school has gained the Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Achievement award in recognition of its commitment to ensuring that the curriculum reflects and values diversity.
The school has been awarded the Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark four times and it has achieved the Eco Schools Green flag.
